Zoo Wrocław is the largest and most visited zoo in Poland, as well as one of the top attractions in Wrocław. Founded in 1865, it has grown from a traditional zoological garden into a modern wildlife conservation and education center with more than 1,200 animal species, historic pavilions, large outdoor habitats and the famous Afrykarium.
This is not the kind of place you visit “just for an hour”. Most people spend at least half a day here, especially if they want to see Afrykarium properly, stop for food and explore the larger outdoor sections without rushing.

History of Zoo Wrocław
Zoo Wrocław was founded in 1865, making it the oldest zoo on the territory of present-day Poland. In the beginning, the zoo covered a much smaller area and focused mainly on European animal species.
During the 20th century, despite wars and major historical changes in the city, the zoo gradually expanded and introduced exotic species from around the world. Today, it is not only a tourist attraction but also an important center for wildlife conservation and international breeding programs.
The biggest transformation came in 2014 with the opening of Afrykarium — a large aquarium complex dedicated entirely to African aquatic ecosystems. It became the largest investment in the zoo’s history and helped turn Zoo Wrocław into one of the most modern zoological gardens in Central Europe. Afrykarium now attracts visitors from across Poland and abroad.
